A Moment
The clouds had made a crimson crown
Above the mountains high.
The stormy sun was going down
In a stormy sky.
Why did you let your eyes so rest on me,
And hold your breath between?
In all the ages this can never be
As if it had not been.
Mary Elizabeth Coleridge

ReplyDeletethere's vast difference between these two poems ,, though they look similar ... the one u presented represents hope n recurrence of happiness .. the re-living the perpetual togetherness ... it seems that it could happen with all and sundry ... of course it doesn't belittle their love and feelings .. its beautiful its monumental ... but again it has a happy ending ... its too happy, too optimistic .... on the other hand mary tells about a moment ... a simple an inordinate moment that threw her in a convulsion ... she or he cannot live a normal life thereafter ... its a moment that changes everything ... this is the moment when u realize what u r born for ... why u live ... this's the moment that decides what u r ... its too pessimistic .... because a single moment decides ur life , dictates ur happiness for ever ... it doesn't recur .. its there or its not ... its like thereafter u have no choice of ur own .... its the doom that follows eternal bliss ... not everyone can bear it ... mary's devastated ... for a single moment she has her life changed to an everlasting agony .... not with this poet... this poet is contended ... this poet knows happiness is everlasting .... its recurring.... this poet is much much better than mary ... he symbolizes hope n beauty ... mary symbolizes an everlasting blissful n painful moment ... so its better than mary...
